124 Lock Tender

Don Zeiler is the Locks Master and Emsworth Locks and Dams located six miles below Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He maintains traffic across the dam that separates the different parts of the Ohio River. If you take away the locks there would be no traffic between sections of the Ohio River. We can comfortably say that the landscape and lifestyles of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania could not exist without locks. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

89 Giving a Bridge Its Purpose

89 Giving a Bridge Its Purpose

I grew up along the edges of the Appalachian Mountains of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Bridges are everywhere and they seem to connect everything. The ridges and valleys created by past geologic events created challenges for people and commerce. Water, in Pittsburgh, is usually the central reason that the bridges have been constructed. Giving a bridge its purpose requires water beneath every bridge or, at least, reminisce of water. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

126 A City's Life Line

126 A City's Life Line

Many a time, cities are built where the rivers flow. The rivers are fundamental to many daily functions including water resources, industry and commerce. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a perfect example of this.  Don and Jason, U.S. Corp of Engineers, reinforce the importance for all of us to focus on maintaining and being a good steward for our rivers. When rivers are healthy, communities thrive. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.
