98 Collateral Damage

98 Collateral Damage

Running a processing plant requires the raw food products be in close proximity. When fields lay fallow, the food processing plan must receive its tomatoes from a greater distance and then it’s all about economics? 97 A Farm Workers Worry

97 A Farm Workers Worry

California agriculture is a thirty-billion-dollar business that is very much dependent on the strong work ethics of the farmworker community. I met two farm workers in the Central Valley during the 2009 drought. I remember how that drought turned farms upside down across the western side of the valley. Farmworkers, Carlos and Rubin, realized the stark reality that when there is no water, there is no work. Ditches were dry and they didn’t know when more water would come. How does a farmworker and their family know if they will have employment next year? Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

129 Montana Water Rights

129 Montana Water Rights

During a 19th Century quest to provide miners with a legal claim to their mineral rights was the emergence of a similar doctrine used for assigning water rights. Handling water issues in Montana started off with much controversy over the philosophical approach that should be followed. Do we share or do we follow a first in time, first in right philosophy? Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

160  A Historian’s View of the Delta

160  A Historian’s View of the Delta

Change is an understatement that is occurring in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta today. It used to be that the Delta controlled our communities but now our communities are changing the Delta. Conditions have reversed. Waters of the Delta are in the midst of a tug-of-war. If California is not careful, the largest inland delta on the western coast of the North American continent will be damaged. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

83 Adjusting to the Times

Farmers put it all on the line every single year because nobody really knows how much water will be available to feed the crops each year. Decisions are made many months before the seeds are planted.  John Lane is an Ohio farmer that has been growing crops since the mid-1950s. A lot of things have changed in the last 70 years; manmade and natural. John has learned to adjust. He has found a way to remain productive and considerate of his community.  Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.
