211 Fish in Palm Springs, California????

211 Fish in Palm Springs, California????

One of the more pleasant surprises that I have found is fresh fish in the desert. Louis Pagano has had a passion for the watery landscapes of the planet and has probably visited every ocean of the world.  He’s the fish guy and provides fish at his desert restaurants in the southern California desert. And when not at his restaurants, he is on the water, fishing and noticing some pretty unusual water conditions and aquatic behavior.  Something is up in our oceans and he, in his 65 years, is seeing some pretty strange fish behavior. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

Colorado priorities for using groundwater are a lot like Washington, Montana, Wyoming and Nevada. When water shortage areas are identified, people are recognizing that working together is the most desirable response to keeping a health supply of good quality groundwater.  Retired Colorado State Engineer, Bob Longenball, believes that the wise use of both surface and groundwater is absolutely essential  to maximize the use of water for Colorado.  Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

Water supplies are much more obtainable and sustainable if we consider our water source in a larger area of availability. Share and consider your neighbors and yourself as the stewards and consumers of the water supply. Although a lot of rain falls in Jacksonville, Florida, it just doesn’t fall where you want it. The topography is so flat that the only possible reservoir for storing all that rainfall is the underlying groundwater aquifers. The value of water is Jacksonville has changed in twenty years. To be sustainable, they are now charging conservation rates for water and people are responding. Today, consumptive water use has dropped 30% to 40%, clearly a success for a community of  850,000 people. 220 A Tribe Without Salmon- For Now

220 A Tribe Without Salmon- For Now

The Winnemem Wintu People prayed in the 1800s that the Salmon would wait for their tribal people by the ice field.  It’s puzzling that the tribe would have prayed such a prayer at that time. You see, there was plenty of Salmon in the McCloud area water system in the 1800s. Salmon runs have become much less prolific in recent decades for a variety of reason, including the construction of  Shasta Dam. Surprisingly, the Maori Tribal People of New Zealand contacted Chief Caleen Sisk several years ago and told her that they had their Salmon. Water is center stage, once again, in this story about the disappearance and reappearance of Salmon. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

8 Caretakers of the Earth- The Arctic Poles

The Arctic and Antarctic regions play a significant role in supporting the life styles that we enjoy today. It gives us the cycles of the seasons, migration of birds, April showers, rise and fall of groundwater table and the first snowfall of winter. How is it that water’s response to the heat of the sun could erase generations of memories of what the good old days were like. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

184 Water Politics in War

184 Water Politics in War

Life in war torn regions in Afghanistan are bad enough for the communities, but it can be even more hopeless when the water runs out.  Mohammand Obaid shared a personal experience of his when the water to his province was cut off by the Taliban in order to take control of the region. No water was available for anything, not even drinking. As heartbreaking as this was, there was a positive outcome. After you listen to Mohammand’s story, make sure you thank every soldier that has served in Afghanistan. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

115 The Value of Information

115 The Value of Information

We have known that measuring rain events and stream flows need to be measured at the same scale. Now the importance in collecting groundwater data is also recognized as requiring the same level of attention. Montana has a groundwater assessment program that has raised the bar on building a database that is accessible to the water using public. Drought is always a concern in Montana so data of this sort is valuable for all groundwater users, water purveyors and rural residential well owners. Water levels of today are not the water levels of tomorrow. We need to make good water decisions all the time. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.
