137 Rethinking Prior Appropriation

137 Rethinking Prior Appropriation

Some people wonder if the prior appropriative doctrine is still working well.   Rachael Osborn, Center for the Environmental Law and Policy in Spokane, Washington focuses on protecting fresh waters of western Washington. She feels current water law doesn’t use water efficiently and is inequitable. Enormous conflicts are in our future. Rachael is an advocate to changing the prior appropriative doctrine if the changes can consider water that drives the economy. It’s about how we see our connection with the environment and each other. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

89 Giving a Bridge Its Purpose

89 Giving a Bridge Its Purpose

I grew up along the edges of the Appalachian Mountains of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Bridges are everywhere and they seem to connect everything. The ridges and valleys created by past geologic events created challenges for people and commerce. Water, in Pittsburgh, is usually the central reason that the bridges have been constructed. Giving a bridge its purpose requires water beneath every bridge or, at least, reminisce of water. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

Build it and they will come. Just south of Las Vegas and close to the Arizona/Nevada border was the perfect spot to store water flowing in the Colorado River.  The big S (for Storage) is critical for stability and reliable water deliveries and this is what Hoover Dam was built to accomplish. The birth of Lake Mead was created and this big news circulated quickly in the early 1930s. Waterscapes have a way of creating great benefits to people and the environment. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

195 The Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake has some very special benefits to mankind and environment. First of all, it’s the greatest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. The migration of birds come to the Great Salt Lake to fatten up so they can continue to migrate across the desert.   And then we have the benefits to man; that Cold Smoke that skiers look for during each winter season. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

186 Don't Just Sit There

186 Don't Just Sit There

Growing up, my parents instilled an attitude that I still believe to this day. Don’t just sit there if you see someone needing help, you help them.   Overuse of agricultural water has caused much suffering in Yemen. Technical and social behavior changes are needed. So, do we just sit there as we see hardship taking place or do we contribute to solving the problem? Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

78 A River's Worth- the Truckee River

78 A River's Worth- the Truckee River

Eighty percent of the Truckee River Meadows Authority’s water supply comes from Lake Tahoe. Snow, tributary creeks and springs and some groundwater ultimately provide the water supply that is needed for the district. The existing reservoirs are also a part of the water system. These storage areas facilitate management through the benefits of water banking in the reservoir and  a source to send flows into the Truckee River. Complexities in managing the entire system are supported by the public more now than ever. The public has taken on a, “Let’s get involved with the river”, as a strong stewardship effort that protects the resource and provides recreational value. Knowing your source for drinking water really motivates the management of that source. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

54 U.S. Foreign Policy and Water

54 U.S. Foreign Policy and Water

Virtually every major U.S. foreign policy objective is dependent on how well the U.S. addresses global water. This is important because water and sanitation issues can undermine democracy building and poverty reduction. An even greater benefit is when relationships and trust gained by solving water issues manifest into resolving other key issues of conflict. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.
